Mary Harney – foreign junkets with husband paid for by Irish taxpayer.

  • 2001 Harney got the government jet to bring her to Leitrim to open a new off-licence owned by a Progressive Democrat supporter.  The trip cost €1,500. Harney later apologised for having abused her position and admitted that using the plane was wrong.
  • 24 Oct 2009 – Harney racked up $5,000 bill at luxury hotel on Super Bowl trip – accompanied by her husband Brian Geoghegan and Tony Holohan among others.
  • 2010 Harney went on a two-week visit to New Zealand.  Harney excused her absence from the country by claiming she was examining how New Zealand runs its health service but she’d had six years opportunity to do that around the world prior to that
  • While that may have fitted within the cabinet guidelines and have been approved by Cowen but it was hardly justifiable at a time when the State was already borrowing over €400 million a week and many people had their State funded entitlements reduced or withdrawn.
