PHARMA, GVT are NOT your Friend

This page is a work in progress – please return for updates

Big Pharma and government are NOT your friend when it comes to health.  When was the last time you heard of a cancer breakthrough?  New (affordable) treatment?  Even if you get free medicine from your gvt – the taxpayer still pays.  The gvt pay a hefty price for that medicine without question or bargaining.

Most drugs are “discovered” in labs that are government and pharma funded. Bear in mind many labs are based in government funded Universities which pay these researchers, provide them with their free lab etc.

Example: Professor Luke O’Neill, who is a professor of biochemistry at Trinity, has been awarded €985,950 for his continued research following his discovery of an off-switch for inflammation in the body called itaconate. This project will look at itaconate to develop potential new treatments for inflammatory diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease.  – 2 Nov 2020

Patents are registered by the “researcher” who invents them.  If the drug is deemed to have saleable value the “researcher” usually founds a “spin-off” private company and goes on to develop it.  THEN he probably sells the company to a pharma company.  Who keeps that money?  I will give you ONE guess.  It certainly does not go back to gvt kitty – well, it might but not the public expenditure kitty.

Example: Irish biotech, Inflazome, co-founded by Professor O’Neill and Australian researcher Professor Matt Cooper has been acquired by Swiss healthcare giant Roche in a landmark deal worth €380 million. – 21 Sept 2020

When the experiment fails the money spent is written off, no spending accountability made public and the researchers just go on to the next grant aided project – case in point Luke O’Neill

Example: Opsona Therapeutics, one of the most heavily backed Irish biotech start-ups, is to be wound up after 14 years in which it raised more than €76,500,000 in funding. Money in the toilet.

Ireland – 2-tier society especially when it comes to health

Health stores angry at VAT crackdown on food supplements – 19 Nov 2018

And WHY would a CARING government or a CARING Minister for Health, Simon Harris and a CARING Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe think it is right to raise the cost of vital vitamins?  – Minister Paschal Donohoe defends VAT hike on food supplements – 23 Jan 2019

The rich would not be affected, once again just a blow to the lower income earners in the area of health. Tax change could mean €6 rise in cost of food supplements – 20 July 2019.

Now, sadly, due to silence on the part of nutritionists and doctors plus collusion against the lower income sectors, the vital supplements NEEDED to help addicts break free from Drugs or Alcohol are costing way more BECAUSE the gvt wants part of the action.

Not only that – the government has made it ILLEGAL to import certain supplements into Ireland and banned their sale in Health Shops.  Go figure!

Are you thinking something is not quite right?
