How Good Is Your Focus?

I’m pretty sure that if I could focus my mind a bit better I would have no problem making stuff happen – maybe even be able to move stuff around the room lol!  That is not to say that I don’t do pretty well as it is, all things considered.

However, my timeout during COVID-19 is really showing me how my concentration skills and willpower have gone downhill in the last 4 – 5 years.  Having said that – and I am thinking out loud here, I am not 100% sure if it is a problem with my willpower aka self-discipline or me giving myself permission to be lazy.

Maybe more importantly – my timeout is showing how my feelings, attitude and moods are affected and, to a degree, controlled by what I see and hear.

You see, at the beginning, two months ago, I was tense (but didn’t really acknowledge it), on auto-pilot and a bit directionless.  Should I do this? Should I do that?  How long would this last?  How to make the most of my time?  How to be productive?  See, still on the old millwheel!

If you are having thoughts like the above, here is a really good piece from Elizabeth Gilbert’s Instagram about the pressure to be productive

Then I started to relax and gain somewhat of a balance (or so I thought). In actual fact what I did was give in, more or less completely, to what took my fancy in the moment (or so I thought again).  No harm in that, after all I did deserve some time out (my justification)

Started a great health routine (maybe not)

So, for SEVERAL days I started out really excellently – wake at 4am (without alarm clock), 1 hour Dr. Joe meditation followed by about 90 mins on the bike along the Nile and some countryside.  Back to Mara House, shower, breakfast, coffee.  Now, in all fairness, we have a degree of social distancing going on here in Egypt, but even without that, I would not be going out for the rest of the day anyway – just too hot for me.

So the rest of the day is spent on my bed (because it is easier for my back than sitting on any chair I have), with the laptop.  I have a lovely little table that sits like a bridge over my legs and has enough room on which to rest my arms also – very comfortable.

Some days I was very good – did lots of work on writing my family history stories and also my book about the private lives of Mohamed Ali’s family. BUT, if I sat on the bed and first turned on YouTube, then mostly my entire day went on watching “Magnificient Century”.  Yes, I felt guilty at first, then I accepted it as relaxation.  Oh, how we lie to ourselves!

How a film series affected me

I know I am rambling here… the thing is, in the beginning the series really gripped me, the set furnishings, the clothes, and of course the true story line.  I was rooting for Hurrem Sultana, the underdog, the slave who rose to be an unstoppable power in her own right.

However, I found myself turning against Hurrem – she just turned out to be too much of a bitch for me.  Plus they changed the actress and how she dressed – colors all wrong for her (red dresses with red/ginger hair, for God’s sake!).  Hurrem now look more like one of Disney’s wicked witches – they have even changed her crowns to reflect that.

So, now when I would finish watching the episodes I no longer felt good or even ok.  I felt apprehensive about whom Hurrem was going to kill next.  Added to that I liked her sons, not so much her daughter because she’s like Hurrem, and I liked her stepson whom eventually she will succeed in having executed.  That’s the worst part, I already know the actual historical facts.  This is now the biggest help to me NOT to switch on YouTube first thing in the morning!  But I am quite sure I will watch the series to the bitter end.

Hooked – Addicted!

This addiction to the series and inability to switch off from it once I started had me questioning my lack of willpower.

Along with my inability to switch off the show after an episode or two (they are really good with the cliffhanger endings on each episode!), goes a decreasing ability to focus in my meditations.  Now, I don’t know how these tie in with each other, or if they do, but I do notice these two facts.

Today, I searched on YouTube for ways to strengthen my power of focusing.  If you are thinking about the same then below are some of what I have found.

Break free of the Program

We have become programmed to look at what is around us and manifest more of the same.  Smart people – the rich people – the MEGA RICH people have ALL wised up to this.   Many famous actors/actresses are now telling us how they did it and sharing tips with us – it always comes down to focus, re-programming themselves and belief.

How are we programmed?  Go through the list of channels on your TV – find one, just one that is inspiring or uplifting?  I dare you.  Every single one is about bad news, crime, debt, hopelessness, police catching criminal, depressing soaps and so called “reality shows”.

Why are we being programmed this way?  To keep us trudging along like workhorses every day til we die in dead-end jobs where we earn enough just to keep us alive.  Modern day slavery, and the overseer with the whip is the media and your TV.

Now if you are a happy person then that’s great but if you are not a happy person it is not good at all because crap keeps falling all around you.  Please bear with me – I’m getting to the point now 🙂

Do you remember the Celtic Tiger?  Wasn’t it great?  Now please, please, please, can I ask you to forget all your normal and “common sense” way of thinking for one minute here?  Do you remember how the economists, news and maybe even you started saying “It just can’t go on, the bubble has to burst!”  On and on and on it went – I knew then what was coming next.  Universal Law delivered on all our comments and expectations – at critical mass of thought on those sentences – the bubble burst.

The truth of the matter is WE TALKED AND THOUGHT OURSELVES INTO A GLOBAL DEPRESSION.

The good news is WE CAN ALSO TALK AND FOCUS OUR WAY OUT OF IT.

Hold on a minute please, stop the chatter of “reason” that is now exploding inside your head…..please just for one minute suspend your normal disbelief.  Just supposing, just supposing, just supposing what I am saying is true……whether you believe it now or not….in the off chance that I am right – are you willing to give it a go?

Will you be one of the people to put your energy of thought and focus into bringing Ireland back into THRIVING ECONOMIC GROWTH in spite of everything you now observe?  There is a lot we can do.

It is all the good news I find that shows Ireland is recovering (I asked you to tell the chatter inside your head to shut up and let you think, please).  What I am really asking you to do is focus on the good stuff that you see around and share it.  Universal Law dictates that we can change Ireland’s Economy back to growth in spite of those bent on bringing us to our knees.  We are stronger than that and everyone doesn’t have to focus on it – a few can do the work for many.

  • What else can you do?
  • Turn off the news.
  • Don’t read the negative economic forecasts
  • Appreciate the good and happy stuff you see around
  • Don’t share on twitter, facebook, the negative crap whether it is “true” or not.  There is a lot of stuff that is ‘true’ that you do not want to bring into your reality!
  • SHARE everywhere everything you see as positive and uplifting.
  • Don’t argue with anyone about this.

As a by-product of doing this experiment you can measure your own personal economic success, because, if you do this your own situation must improve regardless of what is going on around you.  I am personal proof of this – I am still running a successful, growing business in the midst of revolutionary times and living in a country that has gone through a Revolution.  What is going on around you has nothing to do with you unless you believe it does.

Programmed to fear and react – By Whom and WHY?

10 people witness a car accident – Afterwards each witness is interviewed separately.  None of the ten people reported the incident the same way.  This is an experiment that has been conducted many times by scientists.

Each one of us interprets what we see and hear through the individual lens of our past personal life experiences, culture, religion, upbringing and belief systems.  Yet, the world continually strives to make us all the same.  Each religion insists it is the true religion and all others are false.

Some fight for nationalism and cultural independence while others insist we should all assimilate into a common culture.  We are polarised into Extreme Right-Wing, Centerists and Extreme Left-Wing factions and a hundred other factions in between.  We are willing to kill, eliminate, torture and annihilate to make us all the one belief, all the one culture, all under the one law.

WHY?  What is it that drives us to be like this?  At it’s most basic source it is FEAR.

The biggest fear we all have in common is FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN. We are afraid of people who are different.

At least that is the conclusion one could so easily come to after an hour or two watching the different TV news channels.  We all have a common basic instinct when threatened – that instinct gives us the choice between FLIGHT and FIGHT.

Interesting that there is only one letter in the difference between both words – flight and fight

Next time you see or hear someone speaking against or for some person, some community, some entity, some organisation, some religion – hold back on your instinctive immediate unthinking responsive judgement which has you agreeing or disagreeing with the speaker.

Instead, read between the lines of what that person is saying.  What does he want you to do?  Why?  If you respond as he wishes, what does he have to gain?

Do some research into the person, analyse his motives, SEE what drives him.

Ask yourself WHY does he feel fear rather than focusing on WHAT he is fearful of.

What is driving him?

When you are watching the News channels and reading the papers- remember you are not watching or reading an impartial observation of an event.  You are being programmed to think in a certain way.  Ask yourself – by whom and why?

Why am I (Mara) thinking about this now?  Because I am in a country – and watch the next sentence.  I don’t know if I am in the middle of a revolution or if I have lived through a revolution.  My senses tell me one thing yet the TV and media tells me the other.

Who or what is manipulating the media here in Egypt, both the foreign media and the domestic?

WHY?

Are they Egyptian or are they foreign?

I have no idea but I do know that the reality I experience when I am in Luxor and in Cairo is not what I see either on TV, the papers or even other blogs!!

So, my conclusion – your reality is not my reality – does that make either of us right or either of us wrong?

Can we not agree that we are experiencing different realities in the same time/space?

Can we not take it a step further and let each of us have our own experience?

Can we celebrate our commonality and appreciate our diversity?
